Our History

1830
Ichibei Iwata founds a futon shop pn Sanjo Street in Kyoto, Japan, when futons were common only among the wealthy.

1932
The company begins to supply cushions to the three major tea houses of Japan, all descended from the tea masuter Rikyu.

1963
IWATA Inc., a manufacturer specialising in down bedding, is founded, and our products trigger a down bedding boom in Japan.

1986
We developed down bedding that can be washed and line-dried.

1987
We introduce functional bedding using the long hair of camel and muskox.

1995
We begin our own professional certification program, ‘Certified Sleep Environmental Advisor.’

2000　
We are certified ISO9001, the most recognized international standard for quality management and assurance.

2002　
We earn the Eco-Tex Standard 100, an international safety standard for textile products.

2008
Our mattress LARKOWL receives the Good Design Award.

2010
We open a custom-bedding shop and showroom in Kyoto.

2011
We open a new showroom in the Ginza district of Tokyo.

2012
We participate in the Maison & Objet International Trade Show in Paris.

2016
The Ginza showroom moves to the Shinjuku district of Tokyo. We open a new showroom in Nagoya and Kobe.
